Development in Action's Trustees
Development in Action’s trustees are responsible for the governance of Development in Action. Our Trustees accept ultimate responsibility for directing the affairs of the charity, and ensuring that it is solvent, well-run, and delivering the charitable outcomes for the benefit of the public for which it has been set up. Ruth Bergan Ruth completed a five month placement at the Development Education Society, Bangalore, from September 2001 then spent a year volunteering in Pondicherry with Vellankani orphanage, Shanthi Bhavan HIV clinic and Sharana social development organisation. She was DiA's UK Coordinator from September 2003 and has been an active volunteer since then. Ruth is Campaigns Officer for Homeworkers Worldwide (HWW) an international NGO working for recognition for homebased workers and their labour rights. She has worked for HWW for one year and is responsible for their campaigns, partnership working and fundraising. Ruth previously worked as a project officer for Oxfam on refugee, migration, gender and livelihoods issues. She holds a Master's degree in International Development. Liza CoffinLiza volunteered at the Development Education Society in Bangalore for five months from 2002-03. On returning to the UK she joined DiA’s management committee and held a variety of roles including Chair, until her appointment as a trustee. Liza is a public affairs professional with substantial experience in the health sector. She is currently working at The Health Foundation, an independent charity working to improving the quality of healthcare in the UK and beyond. Her career began in the House of Commons where she spent three years working as parliamentary researcher for a variety of MPs. Liza holds a degree in English and is currently studying for a diploma in economics. Joni HillmanJoni volunteered at the Development Education Society in Bangalore in 2003 and subsequently joined the DiA management committee as Chair for two years and magazine editor for one year. She was interim India Co-ordinator in 2006. Outside of DiA, she works for Bond, the UK network of development NGOs, doing policy and lobbying work related to funding for international development. Previously she ran a start-up social enterprise working with the homeless. Other volunteer experience includes teaching in Eastern Europe and working in community development in Uganda. She has an MA in History from the University of Edinburgh and an MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Leah WatersLeah completed a five month placement at Barli Development Institute for Rural Women, Indore, from September 2001. On return, she took on the role of Marketing and Communications Officer on the DiA Committee. In absence of a UK Coordinator in 2003, she took on the role for five months. Leah has remained an active volunteer since then. Leah is part of the Senior Management Team at Fairbridge, a national charity working with at risk young people across the UK. She has worked for Fairbridge since 2005 and is currently Head of Fundraising. Previous roles within the organisation focused on statutory and lottery fundraising and as well as training, development and support of fundraising staff. Before working for Fairbridge Leah worked as a fundraiser for a London based social development charity. Leah holds a MA in Religious Studies and Development Studies from the University of Leeds. Leah currently lives in London with her husband. Jen HawkinsDiA's newest trustee Jen works within the financial services sector for KPMG and is currently studying for her ACA qualification. She holds a degree in Geography from Cambridge University and has travelled independently in India. Her volunteer experience includes a charity expedition to Ecuador working with orphans and various fundraising events. Jen's financial expertise, enthusiasm and energy are going to make her an excellent addition to the team.
