Development education by young people for young people

Placement Details - Action for Social Advancement (5-month placement only)

ASA is an N.G.O. focusing on natural resource management in tribal villages. It is built on the firm belief that development had to be from inside and that the people, if offered an opportunity and faith restored in their own capabilities would do it on their on. The mission is to conduct an extensive and intensive participatory and sustainable development process through empowerment of local community and with special focus on the role of women and the socio-economically deprived sections of society. The organisation is based in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and works within the contiguous and predominantly tribal surrounding areas. It currently operates over 2000 community groups.

ASA are looking for volunteers to work on research, data collection and documentation of case studies of different field projects. This would require spending considerable time in the field prior to writing up. They also want volunteers to assist in the office with designing and developing promotional leaflets, training manuals and having input into material for the website.

Accommodation

There is a guest room adjoined to the head office in Bhopal with room for two people. The area is a peaceful residential area about 6km from central Bhopal but with plenty of amenities nearby.

About you

ASA require mature graduates in the disciplines of geography, development studies environmental science, natural resources, agriculture, IT or related.  They would also accept people with relevant work experience.  Volunteers would be expected to carry out research, collect data and to work on documentation, so prior experience in these areas would be useful.  They would like volunteers who have competent IT and design skills, and lots of creativity, in order to produce leaflets, develop training materials and develop proposals for the website.  They do not require web-design skills, although this might be a bonus.  There may be additional costs incurred.
